Vacation Bible School

We began day one of our Vacation Bible school outreach for the kids. We began by singing some songs with them. We sang “I’m in the Lord’s Army” and some other songs that had motions. We split them up into 3 teams – the green crocodiles, the red roosters and the yellow lions. We gave them colored bandanas to wear. We then performed a skit on stage with the kids – the story of David and Goliath. After main session, the kids broke up into stations. Some did crafts, some did memory verses and the some did games. We rotated them in and out of the stations and I got to work with crafts. We made little necklaces with beads and a cross on them. Afterwards, we all got back together to close it out. I love working with kids and had a great first day with them.

Kids standing on their heads

Kids standing on their heads

Today was our last day of Vacation Bible School. I think overall it was a success. We averaged about 95 kids each day. I planned out a big obstacle course for the last day. It was a little difficult trying to explain it to them at first, but they figured it out. After their Bible lesson, we gave them sunglasses to wear. As fun as I had today, I was wiped. These kids can really wear you out.

I also got a taste of driving in Kenya for the first time. Stephanie, Derek and I took 7 kids out to dinner for chicken and chips (fries) at the Bonapet Cafe in Ngong. I got to drive the van. Everything is backwards compared to America. The steering wheel is on the right side of the car and they drive on the left side of the street. Plus there are people walking everywhere. It was quite the adventure, but we made it there and back safely. The kids loved it! They rarely get outside Huruma and have a nice dinner like this. We then enjoyed a round of Kenyan tea for dessert.

After dinner, I did my good deed for the night. I got a late night summon to kill a big spider in the girl’s room. It was funny seeing their reaction.

Today was Day 2 of VBS. We had another good day, but we also learned our lesson too. Because we have a ‘spy’ theme for VBS, we gave all the kids little magnifying glasses. Well…. it didn’t take long for them to go around burning each other and other things. So Caroline had to confiscate them all. We learned our lesson the hard way – no weapons as gifts for the kids.

We got a little sad news about one of the workers that takes care of the animals here. His wife had a baby last week and today we found out the baby died this morning. He is a good guy and we felt for him.

Today was one of those days you hate on mission trips. Our paint for the building never arrived and we had to cancel our project for the day. Many of the kids were not around as well. So it was a very long day. I found myself playing cards in my room.  I did play Frisbee with a lid with one of the kids. Pastor Linn has been holding a class on Romans for some of the Kenyan leaders that want to dig deeper. So I ended up attending and it was really good for me. We covered  Romans 3 and the topic of sin.

We had a little fun and placed a fake mechanical rat in the girls room before bedtime. For the record, Pastor Linn bought it in Dubai.

Today was the start of Vacation Bible School for the kids. They have the week off from school to do this. The slogan for the week is “Wonderful Mystery” based out of John 15:15. We are using a “spy” theme to go along with this. Micah and Jayna are walking around in trench coats and sunglasses looking around for clues. We have crafts and story time. I’m in charge of recreation. We had a great first day! After VBS, we gave the kids flip flops that said “Huruma” on them. They loved them!

Today I spent more time getting to know some of the people on my team. Sometimes it is easy to get caught up with the work portion of the trip and forget to make time to get to know the people you are serving with. Had an amazing time sharing testimonies with Dave Hutcherson and then goofing off with some of the high school girls in the kitchen.

Well… maybe not much today. After church, we headed into Karen for lunch and supply shopping. We made a stop at The Junction – a Kenyan mall. There was a restaurant/coffee place there called the Java House that served American food. I ordered a burger and a chocolate shake. It was a nice change from rice and beans. Heather (who is staying for 6 months) talked to me about her passion for missions. It was encouraging to hear considering she is just out of high school. I then wandered off and enjoyed a nice cup of Kenyan coffee at the coffee bar. Then we headed back to prepare for VBS week tomorrow.
