Advent – Day 10

When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy. And going into the house they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh.

Matthew 2:10-11 (ESV)

Ok.. here’s an organization that blends two of my favorite passions – global missions and coffee. I love this ministry and what they do! Back in 2010 I attended a Passion conference in Atlanta and bought some coffee from the Land of a Thousands Hills Coffee Company booth. As I was drinking my coffee, I got to check out what they are all about. Buying coffee from these guys goes to help sustain a community in Rwanda. They partner with some of the farmers and local leaders in the communities to actually sell their coffee here in the U.S. locally. Rwanda is still recovering from the genocide of 1994 and this is one the great causes helping to assist the recovery efforts. I love when organizations use our simple pleasures of life to make a difference in the world.

A rep from Land of a Thousand Hills contacted me a couple of years back to try to set up an account with the church cafe I was a barista at. Even though I wasn’t able to get that going (they opt for the expensive Starbucks crap.. blaa), but I’ve always maintained contact with them. I was excited when Do Good Initiative contacted me this week and ask me to come to Africa this summer. I have much to pray about this, but feel blessed to at least be approached by them. This past month has been amazing with God opening doors to get back onto the field and re-engage my heart for culture and justice. I love the cause behind this organization and it presents a whole new opportunity for me. Drink Coffee.. Do Good!

After a quick stop in Atlanta, we had a 14 hour flight to Dubai, UAE. Even though we did a lot of sitting, it hasn’t been too bad. So how do you kill time on a long flight? Lots of naps, read a book, watch a couple of movies and play lots of Bejeweled and Solitaire. Crazy that we flew over Iran and Saudi  Arabia – center of most of the conflict in the world. Dubai International is one of the busiest airports in the world. There is a very diverse group of people represented here. So far the familiar sights in the airport have been Starbucks, McDonald’s and Cold Stone Creamery. We have a 6 hr layover here but soon we will be departing for Kenya. As far as we know, the other half of our team is already there.

This was a nice Christmas for me. I wanted to really get into the spirit of things this year as last year was a tough year for me. The kids and I made cookies, played in the snow, went to parties, etc. We had fun. For me, I was able to serve at Liberty House and gospels and groceries, serve at the church, spend time with friends and drink alot of Starbucks. It didn;’t get too commercial for me as I did my shopping early and eased up on the decorating. But I enjoyed making some x-mas dishes and listening to music. I also got to spend some time with my family who I hadn’t seen in some time. It was a good xmas for me.

Xmas Stuff

I was at Target. The Christmas stuff is out and in full force. I didn’t celebrate x-mas last year because I was going through tough times. Plus my ex got all the x-mas decorations. So this will be a whole adventure in my approach to x-mas. I’m single and live in an apartment. Never been in that situation at Christmas time. I always had someone to share it with and a big house that I had to get on a ladder and hang lights on. I’ve planned some fun stuff with my boys and started my x-mas shopping for them. But I want this year to be special for me. Christ is in control of my life and I want to honor his birth in a special way. I’ve also made some incredible friends this year and I want to share my appreciation that I have each one of them in a special way. I’m already signed up to work at most of the church services on x-mas eve, so I’m getting my service in for the day. And I’m sure I whip up something from some recipe books to eat. Starbucks is always a fun hangout around this time – love the seasonal flavors! And of course when it gets cold, I love to pile on the layers of clothes. I guess you can say that I slowly getting in the Christmas spirit a little early also.
