Sexy time..

I’m driving down the 202 and I see the big billboard for Cornerstone’s new series ‘Bringing Sexy Back’. It is crazy that a church is renting a billboard to get people to church for this particular series. Chandler is the 4th hightest in the nation for viewing pornagraphy. Many of the marriages in this town are being affected by this and/or by someone having an affair. That’s crazy! Chandler is such a young family town. I’ll be honest with you.. I was a little skeptical on the church doing commercials and renting a billboard to bring people to talk about this issue. But I like the they are appraoching this. I’m not a big fan of Christians ‘dumping’ on people to get them to come to church. And I’m definetly don’t like judgemental Christians. I think there is a loving way to approach others about the good news of Christ. I like that the signs and the commercial does enough to peak interest to non-Christians. Those that are stuggling in their marriages and with pornagraphy need to know there is freedom through Christ.
Today, the Arizona Republic called inquiring about the billboard… its time to see how amazing our God is.

Missions and outreach are my passion. But I have been looking and praying for something locally to do. I occasionally volunteer at Liberty House. I also have worked at a ministry called Gospel and Groceries. This ministry reaches out to the neighborhoods of the needy. We provide groceries, clothes and put on a worship service for them. The current neighborhood we are reaching is a poor hispanic community in Chandler. We had over 50 volunteers show up today. It was awesome! It was an amazing day. I have prayed and decided this is going to be my new ministry. I am looking forward to seeing where God leads this new adventure in my life.  –   “For the poor will never cease to be in the land; therefore I command you, saying, ‘You shall freely open your hand to your brother, to your needy and poor in your land'” Deut 15:11

Starving Jesus

It was a rough day for me. Today was what would have been my 10th wedding anniversary. I woke up not wanting to let the day get to me. I wanted to do something productive instead of sulk on the couch. So I decided to serve.

sj

Craig Gross of the XXX church and J.R. Mahon wrote a book called Starving Jesus. The theme was that too many Christians are not doing enough to tell others about Jesus. Too many Christians are stuck in the pews. So they rented an RV and started a 40 day road trip across the U.S. to visit different cities and to challenge those within the church to put their faith in action. In addition to fasting during the 40 day journey, they also brought a pew along and chained themselves to it wherever they stopped.

sj1cryiDay 6 consisted of a stop in Chandler, AZ. They challenged us in the community to go serve at the Liberty House. Steve Lappen is the director of Crossroads Youth Intervention – an organization that takes in at-risk youths. The Liberty House is a building that the kids can hang out after school. They have tutoring and after school programs. The goal is not only to get them off the streets, but also present them the gospel. The problem is that CRYi has a small staff and Liberty House is a very old house that is in need of some work and cleaning. So a team of us when down there to work on the place. It was a hot, but very rewarding day.

That evening, Craig and J.R. spoke at Camber – Cornerstone’s college ministry. They chained themselves to a pew onstage and spoke about the passage in James that states “Faith without works is dead”. Afterwards, Compassion International had a table set up in the lobby. I had the blessing of signing up and sponsoring a child from Haiti named Ladouceur. What a blessing that was! God made an amazing day out of what could have been a rough one for me.

Power of 10

Program from Phoenix Civic Plaza

This is where my story starts. On September 16, my wife and I separated after 9 years of marriage. Earlier this week I stayed with my uncle to give her space. He is a Godly man and has been like an older brother to me. I’m so torn. My world has been turned upside down and I hurt for my two boys for the brokenness they will have to endure. This past week while laying on an air mattress in my uncle’s spare bedroom, I cried out to God. I will admit that for some time I have doubted that He even exists. I asked Him to reveal Himself to me and to help me through this difficult time. I want to be a man of honor and integrity as I endure these trials. I want God to lead my path. This week I surrendered my life to Christ and vowed to live my life for Him. The only thing I asked for in return is for Him to provide good solid people to do this new faith journey with.

I have been attending Cornerstone Christian Fellowship for the past ten years and many at the church have rallied around me to help walk me through this difficult time. Today was their ten year anniversary and they celebrated downtown at the Phoenix Civic Plaza. Pastor Linn Winters was my youth pastor growing up and I have been a part of this church since its initial inception. Now is a time I need my church family more than ever. I took the boys to this event to be a part of this milestone. It was pretty hard for me to be there without my wife. Little did I know, God was answering my prayer by providing this community for me to do life with and working out His plans for my future in the process.
