No… this isn’t another blog about the controversal book by Rob Bell. I just have been zeroed in on the topic of Love. Last week I was having coffee with a Pastor friend and he was telling me about his frustrations with people and how no one responds in love anymore. “It’s about love… LOVE, LOVE, LOVE” he said. “If we just act in love, we would solve so many problems.” This rang in my head over and over again. Jesus simplified the pursuit of righteousness with two commands in Matthew 22:37-39 – “love the Lord your God” and “love your neighbor as yourself”. He is saying that the way God knows love is how we treat people. I just had a situation in which I forgave someone who had sinned against me and vise versa. We had asked for forgiveness from each other and even hugged afterwards. The cool thing is all that yuckiness I carried was gone. I no longer feel any ill will against this person and I can’t tell you how freeing it was. And it all had to do with me obeying God and acting in love towards this person. I was working on some material today on how to deal with anger from my counselor. One step I came across was practicing speaking the truth in LOVE. Wow… this is something I want to get better at. I want to be better at speaking in love even when I feel attacked. I have a heart for people and I care for them, yet I still struggle to show love at times. I want my heart to be on display and to be able to show love to both those I care about and to strangers. I want to show love all the time… love, love, love, love, LOVE.
“When our gaze awakens to the gaze of God, we have started to see. Seeing clearly, we can love well.” – David Powlison Seeing with new eyes
To love your God with all your heart,
Your soul, your strength, your mind,
Enables you to love someone
Who’s hurtful and unkind. —Sper
